Best H3 LED Fog Light Bulbs

Best H3 LED Fog Light Bulbs (2025): The Smallest LED That Actually Fits

H3 is the smallest halogen bulb type still in common use. It's found in fog lights, driving lights, and some older European headlight assemblies. At roughly 35mm long with a single wire connector, it's tiny — and that's exactly why most LED replacements don't fit.

The problem with most H3 LED bulbs on the market is size. They bolt on oversized heat sinks and fans that make the bulb 2-3x longer than the original halogen. The result: the bulb doesn't fit behind the fog light housing, or the dust cap won't close.

If you've tried an H3 LED that didn't fit, you're not alone. Here's what to look for and what actually works.

Why H3 LED Bulbs Are Hard to Get Right

H3 is unique among headlight bulb types:

  • Single wire connector — unlike most bulbs that use a multi-pin base, H3 has one wire and a metal tab
  • Extremely compact housing — fog light assemblies leave almost no room behind the lens
  • Low mounting position — fog lights sit low on the bumper, exposed to water, mud, and road debris

Any H3 LED replacement needs to be: 1. As close to the original halogen size as possible 2. Waterproof — IP67 or higher 3. Properly focused — fog lights need a wide, flat beam pattern, not a spotlight

Driveon Coast H3: 40mm Total Length

The Coast H3 is one of the most compact H3 LED bulbs available anywhere.

Spec Coast H3 Stock Halogen H3
Total length 40mm ~35mm
Power 23W 55W
Brightness 5,000 LM/pair ~1,400 LM/pair
Color 6000K white 3200K yellow
Cooling Fanless — copper PCB N/A
Lifespan 50,000+ hours ~500 hours

Only 5mm longer than the original halogen. This is the key difference. Most competing H3 LEDs are 60-80mm long — nearly double the original. The Coast H3 fits behind factory dust caps without modification.

What Makes Fog Lights Different from Headlights

Fog lights aren't designed to illuminate the road far ahead. Their job is to cast a wide, flat beam close to the ground — below the fog, rain, or snow line. This means:

  • Beam pattern matters more than raw brightness. A 20,000 lumen fog light that throws light everywhere is worse than a 5,000 lumen fog light with a proper flat beam.
  • Color temperature matters. 6000K white works well for most conditions. Some drivers prefer 3000K yellow for heavy fog — but for everyday driving, white fog lights provide the best visibility.
  • Aim matters. Fog lights should be aimed low and flat. After installing LED fog lights, check the aim — the beam should hit the ground 20-30 feet in front of your vehicle.

H3 vs. H11 Fog Lights

Some vehicles offer both H3 and H11 as fog light options depending on trim or model year. Here's how they compare:

H3 H11
Connector Single wire + tab Multi-pin twist-lock
Size Very small (~35mm) Medium (~55mm)
Common vehicles Older imports, VW, Subaru Most modern vehicles
LED upgrade difficulty Hard (size constraints) Easy (plenty of room)

Installation Guide

H3 installation is slightly different from other bulb types because of its unique single-wire design:

  1. Access the fog light. Most fog lights are accessed from under the bumper or behind a wheel well liner. You may need to turn the wheel and remove a few clips.

  2. Remove the old bulb. Unscrew the metal retaining ring (if present) and pull the bulb straight out. Disconnect the single wire from the tab on the bulb base.

  3. Connect the new LED. Attach the wire connector to the Coast H3's terminal. Slide the bulb into the housing and secure with the retaining ring.

  4. Check the beam. Turn on the fog lights and verify the beam is flat and wide. If the beam is uneven, rotate the bulb slightly in the housing.

  5. Secure the dust cap. The Coast H3's compact 40mm length should allow the dust cap to close normally. If it's tight, ensure the bulb is fully seated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are LED fog lights legal?

In most US states, yes. LED fog lights are legal as long as they produce white or amber light and are properly aimed. 6000K white falls within legal limits. For more details, see our guide: Are LED Headlights Legal in California?

Will H3 LED fog lights work in rain and fog?

Yes. The Coast H3 is IP68 waterproof — fully sealed against water and dust. The low mounting position of fog lights means water exposure is inevitable, and the Coast is built for it.

Can I use H3 LED bulbs in my headlights?

Some older vehicles use H3 for headlights (not just fog lights). The Coast H3 works in any H3 application — fog lights, headlights, or driving lights. However, for headlight use, consider whether 5,000 lumens per pair is sufficient for your driving conditions.

My H3 housing is extremely tight. Will the Coast fit?

At 40mm total length, the Coast H3 is one of the shortest H3 LED bulbs on the market. If a standard halogen H3 fits, the Coast should fit with only 5mm additional length. If you're still concerned, contact us with your vehicle details and we'll confirm fitment.
